The Official SETI@home group for Cadillac Owners and Enthusiasts

Compiled by Anthony W. Haukap

Few automobiles are fortunate enough to have the rich heritage that is Cadillac and this SETI@home group is a tribute not only to the Cadillac Motor Car Division of General Motors Corporation, but also to Cadillac aficionados all over the world.

SETI@home is a scientific experiment that harnesses the power of hundreds of thousands of Internet connected computers in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). You can participate by running a free program that downloads and analyzes radio telescope data. There's a small but captivating possibility that your computer will detect the faint murmur of a civilization beyond Earth.

SETI@home makes use of the largest radio telescope in the world, the Arecibo telescope in Puerto Rico, to scan the sky for radio signals. So far, nearly all the sky visible from the Arecibo telescope has been scanned at least once. As time progresses, Arecibo passes over the same point several times. This benefits SETI@home, because it allows us to distinguish between signals that occur due to radio frequency interference and actual extraterrestrial signals. After the data are recorded onto tapes at Arecibo, they are shipped back to the SETI@home lab in Berkeley, California. The data is then broken up into workunits, which are sent out to the client screensaver program for analysis.

The movie Contact, starring Jodie Foster and based on Carl Sagan's novel, contains SETI sequences modeled after Project Phoenix. Some of the interesting science fact and science fiction of Contact is listed here: Contact: the Movie - Ellie's search is real. But we don't use head phones.

If this is the first group you have ever joined then all of your current credit will be given to this group, in addition to all new credit you receive. If you are currently a member of a group and are switching to another group, the new group will receive all of your new credit, but the old group will keep all of your old credit. Joining a group does not affect your personal credit statistics in any way.

Signing Up For The First Time

Simply get the software (if you haven't already) from http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu and create a new personal account. Then go to the Team Cadillac page and click on Join this team. You will need to get your "password" e-mailed to you, so click on the "click here" link after entering your e-mail address in the box provided. When you get your password, return to the Join this team link and sign up properly. If for some reason you need to do a search for the team, then enter 'team cadillac' in the search box and hit "Search" (for some reason, if you do a team search it must be all in lower case). Once you've joined your processing stats will get added to the team total.

Signing Up Using An Exisiting Account

If you are already doing SETI processing on your machines and have an existing personal account just go to the SETI@home Team Cadillac page and join Team Cadillac using the process described above.

  • Totals - The amount of work done by SETI@home participants, broken down according to various criteria. These pages are updated every four hours, except for the domains page which is updated daily.
  • Individual - To see detailed information about your user account, enter your email address below.
  • Groups - SETI@home users can form "groups": for example, students in a school, or employees of a company. Groups can compete to analyze the most data, or they can meet and discuss SETI via the web.

How to Print Your SETI@home Participant Certificate:

First of all, you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 or higher. If you need it, click here.

When you're ready to download the certificate click here. It is a large file (721 kb PDF), so this may take awhile, especially if you have a slower connection. Please be patient!

If all goes well, the certificate will open up in Acrobat Reader. You can then fill in your name. This is just a little tricky. Note the blank area below "present to" and above "this." When you move your Acrobat Reader mouse pointer over this blank area, it should turn from a hand into brackets.

When you see the brackets, click your left mouse button once. An empty text box should appear. Now the easy part: type your name, and then press enter on your keyboard. Finally, print your certificate!

Congratulations! And thank you for being part of SETI@home.

  • Newsletters - The UC Berkeley SETI program received the Smithsonian Institute medal for first place in 1998 science and technology innovation.
  • Server Status - If you are experiencing problems connecting to our server, this may be due to network problems on your end, or our server being swamped with requests.
  • Technical News Reports - This page contains the latest technical news on the astronomical and computer-system sides of SETI@home. We'll try to update it frequently.
  • FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) - Frequently Asked Questions about SETI@home.
  • Download SETI@home - The SETI@home program is a special kind of screensaver. Like other screensavers it starts up when you leave your computer unattended, and it shuts down as soon as you return to work. What it does in the interim is unique. While you are getting coffee, or having lunch or sleeping, your computer will be helping the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence by analyzing data specially captured by the world's largest radio telescope.

    Go HomeSETI@Home UtilitiesGo Top

  • SETILog - The first thing SETILog will do is run the text-only version of SETI@home. SETILog then waits for your work unit to complete. When completed, SETILog saves information about the work unit into a csv (comma separated values) file called SETILog.csv After the work unit is saved SETILog repeats the entire process over again until you press ctrl-c or ctrl-break.
  • SETIWatch - After using SETI@home for the last few months, I recently downloaded the command line version for NT. While the command line version is running it just displays the percentage completed. I wanted to know a little bit more so I wrote a program called SETIWatch. It turns out if you're using the screen saver version of SETI@home you can also benefit from SETIWatch. SETIWatch has been tested on Windows NT and 98.
  • SETI Spy - SETI Spy is a little program I wrote to "spy" on the progress and performance of the SETI@home client. I call it a "spy" because I tried to make it as unobtrusive as possible. SETI Spy has a small memory footprint (about 2.0 MB when minimized) and uses only a small fraction (< 0.1%) of your computer's processing power.
  • SETI Timer - This little application estimates the time it will take to complete a work unit using the CLI client.
  • SETI Driver - The first Microsoft Windows dialog based manager for processing and caching SETI@Home work units. Residing in your system tray, SETI Driver features automatic detection and use of all processors in your system, user resizable caching, transmit while processing, status monitoring of the currently processing work unit, both by itself and with SETI Spy , and it attempts to never loose a work unit. backup download site
  • SETIQ - Seti Queue is a utility that adds queuing to the SETI@home application. It's a fun project that allows people to take part in the great search for stray radio signals from space by using spare computer power on machines across the globe. Unfortunately demand for the tiny bits of radio signals from the now millions of SETI@home applications running throughout the world occasionally seems to outpace the ability to get them. Seti Queue puts a buffer between the SETI@home application and the Seti Server.
  • SETIHide - SetiHide is a tool for the seti@home commandline-client (V 2.4 / V 3.0) What it does: Hides the seti@home cmdline client, so the DOS-box doesn't bother you; Displays the performance of your machine in a chart; Writes a log entry for every wu processed. (time, average, etc); Supports wu caching up to 50 work-units; Starts the seti@home client on windows startup, if desired; Can be run hidden also; Can be run in the SystemTray.
