Getting Started

If you have never listened to a radio scanner before, or even if you have, this guide is for you!

Presented here are the fundamentals necessary to begin understanding the basics of what you can hear over the airwaves. You'll learn how to decode the lingo use by public safety agencies, for example you'll find what a "code-ocean" is; and what happens on the "Tact" channels, plus a whole lot more!

Let's start off with a common question: "What can you hear on a scanner?" Just Take-A-Look at all the different things you can monitor!

A complete guide to to all the jargon and codes used by the City of St. Louis Police Department is worth a look.

And certainly not to be outdone, the St. Louis County Police Department has a separate page devoted to them.

As does the St. Louis Fire Departments

More information on scanning the metro St. Louis area can be found in the St. Louis Scanning Guide.

Should you ever desire to have a scanner of your own (the Uniden BC780XLT is highly recommended as are the Uniden BC246T and BC898T!), you'll find everything you need to begin your journey: St. Louis Frequencies (some call these "scanner codes" but they are in fact radio frequencies), Talkgroup IDs, and programming files for Computer Programmable Scanners all on this site!

Also be sure to visit the Ultimate Scanning Resource Guide for more information on monitoring police and fire communications and links to scanner frequencies, plus support groups for both the scanning enthusiast and the public safety professional.
